Dear Julie,

I was laid off eight months ago and have been actively looking for a job since then.  I've only had a few interviews and it seems like no one's really hiring. How can I make myself stand out as a candidate?

>Jackie Frankel, Minneapolis, MN

Dear Jackie,

Companies are definitely somewhat cautious about making hiring decisions; however there really is a lot of hiring going on.

It's important to stand out as a candidate in specific ways. Are you confident and enthusiastic in your interaction with everyone you meet? Do you project the best possible presentation and image? Are you well-dressed, do you maintain eye contact and is your handshake firm? Are you able to articulate your specific skills and accomplishments concisely and in an interesting way? Do you remember that a networking meeting and an interview is just as much about the other person as it is about you?

Be curious and empathetic. Ask insightful questions and listen well to the answers. Always persevere when trying to connect with someone and follow-through with as much persistence. Ask several people you admire and trust to give you feedback on the things I listed above.

This is a tough time for you so take special care of your mind and your body. Take a class, work out regularly, and spend time with the people you love. Get a part-time job or secure an internship in a field you've always found interesting. By doing these things, you will come across as an interesting and healthy person. Last, keep smiling and laughing!
