One Friday morning I went to the post office to pick up my mail. As I entered, an elderly man was leaving. I made eye contact, smiled, and said "hi." I didn’t know him, and I don’t live in a really small town where everyone greets everyone else. It’s just something I’m in the habit of doing.

Speaking to the crowd

Dear Coach,
I have always been intrigued by politicians, who utilize "Town Hall Meetings" to communicate with their constituents. These meetings seem to be a great tool, allowing voters to ask any questions they want. Recently, I decided to try out the Town Hall concept on a corporate level. I manage a company of 2,000 employees, all in locations outside the United States. In the course of two weeks, I visited 12 countries, presenting a slideshow on the "state of the union" and taking questions. Despite working hard to engage my employees and remove barriers, I feel something is missing. Any ideas?

... For me the hardest part is always checking references. Employers today understand the game we all play with references. Because of legal threats and issues, employers often only admit that the applicant worked at their company and for a specified period of time. It is very hard to get a sense of how someone performed at a company and even anything on his or her attitude. It is almost a waste of time to call a reference...
